Well let’s get to it! It’s time to roll up our sleeves and bake one fabulous Tinkerbell birthday cake!
For this cake, we will just get some store bought boxed cake mix. If you have a great cake mix recipe of your own, then that will work perfectly too! For this cake I used a store bought box mix just to make the process quicker, and it gave me more time to enjoy the icing decorating.
You will need:
* Boxed cake mix (and ingredients directed by the box) * Bulk of white icing (costs less) * Box of multi colors of food coloring * Large cake pan * Icing squeeze bags (still looking for proper name of this) * Icing tip designs (swirls, stars.. etc)
So let’s begin with the basics. You will need to bake the sweet 16 birthday cakes with a large cake pan as the box instructions advise. When the cake is baked, sit it out to cool.
While the cake is cooling, you can then prepare your icing. I recommended buying white icing in bulk ( or even 2 containers) because the color icing mixes are so darn expensive at the grocery stores.
Mix a few dabs of food coloring in with the icing to the colors that you desire.
(Tip: A little bit of food coloring goes a long way!) Mix your primary colors to get more fun colors as well. Tinkerbell has a few basic colors.
Yellow for Tinkerbell’s hair, peach for her skin, green for her dress, and blue for her wings. You can get creative by using different colors as well.
Above is a picture of a Tinkerbell birthday cake that a friend of a friend baked. She baked the image of Tinkerbell head only, but it was super cute!
There are many ways to bake a Tinkerbell birthday cake. You can use Tinkerbell cake pans, you can create your own designs of her, or you can use designs from coloring books.
When all of the icing colors are completed, make sure that they are all set well inside of the icing squeeze bags.
Your cake should hopefully be cooled by now. ( A great way to cool your cake fast is by sticking it in the fridge for about 20-30 minutes!)
Now it’s time to cut the cake into Tinkerbell shape. You can use a thin layer of icing to draw the desired design before cutting it out. If you have a Tinkerbell cake pan then you don’t need to worry too much about this step.
Once you have cut your cake into the Tinkerbell design, you can start the decorating! If you made any mistakes in the cutting process, don’t sweat it! Thankfully the icing works as well as glue.
So decorate away! If you make any mistakes during the icing process, you can always wipe it away or just plop the correct color of icing on top!
Another Great Tip: Using glitter and edible rhinestones is a great idea for a Tinkerbell birthday cake. Tinkerbell is remembered as a mystical magical fairy with a magic wand, so there is always a lot of glitter and light flowing around her.
If you are a bit nervous about baking princess cakes yourself, you can always find an image of Tinkerbell that you like, and bring it to a bakery! They will give you a cost upfront and will let you know how long it will take to get done.
