a black and white theme would work well because it would suit both boys and girls. i suspect you would have quite a few people there as its for the two of you, so you could easily and cheaply rent a hall at a community center, a club etc.
do you want it to be formal? if you do, more people are better. if its just going to be at your house or somewhere like that, you shouldn't have too many people.
